SOC: selection, optimization, compensation
SOC stands for three things: selection, optimization and compensation.
According to Baltes , a successful development, such as to meet various ages (including the fourth age) should involve the maximization of positive outcomes and minimize negative outcomes.
Baltes proposes three actions:
1) select targets according to their abilities, age, situation,
2) aim to optimize the use of its resources
3) make up with strategies to replace lost resources.
For an elderly person, old age will be more pleasant if it tries to accomplish goals that may, if it will optimize the resources available and compensate for those lost in time.
The example of Baltes is the famous pianist Rubinstein : With age, however, has been able to maintain the success of previous years: reducing the repertoire, practicing with the manual change and compensating for the loss of speed of movement.
